Why Clone Bootable SD Card in Windows?

ImageUSB is a free utility which lets you write an image concurrently to multiple USB Flash Drives. Capable of creating exact bit-level copies of USB Flash Drive (UFDs), ImageUSB is an extremely effective tool for the mass duplication of UFDs.

Win32 Disk Imager is a Windows tool for reading data from an SD card and writing to a image file, also, it can be used to write a image file to a SD card. You may first use it to create a image file from a 'Master' SD card, then write the image back to a different SD card to complete the SD card clone. Dec 31, 2020 Recoverit Free Data Recovery is a reliable SD card recovery tool that gives you a full chance of getting your deleted/lost data back. It supports to restore the files which were damaged by virus, power failure, accidental delectation as well as format.

SD cards are widely used on tablet, digital camera, smart phone, music player, and playstation and so on. SD cards made by Samsung, Raspberry PI, SanDisk, etc., earn great popularity among users all over the world. A bootable SD card could minimize the downtime ofthe operating system by swapping to another function and work environment.

Generally speaking, a user would like to clone a bootable SD card for these two mainreasons:

  • For backup. Duplicating a bootable SD card to another place is a good way to protectthis bootable operating system. When the original SD card get lost or damaged, one canget the same environment as soon as possible.

  • For device upgrading. As a removable storage device, SD card is vulnerable to anydamages it receive, virus infection, human error, violent striking, device failure, andso on. Cloning SD card to largerSD card or newer one dramatically improves the performance and security.

You may have other reasons for copying a bootable SD card, but more important thing is tofigure out how to clone the device. After all, Windows misses the cloning feature.

Best Free SD Card Copier

AOMEI Backupper Standard is free SD card copier thatwill help you clone bootable SD card to another SD card, external storage, or computer. Withits powerful features, you are allowed to clone from larger bootable SD card to smaller SDcard and vice versa. You can also make an exact copy of the bootable SD card, i.e. withoutchanging partition's size and layout, by cloning the SD card sector-by-sector.

The 'Disk Clone' feature will clone SD card with multiple partitions, if it has. The 'DiskCopy' feature will also help you backup the bootable SD card into an image file, better tosave, if you like. The 'Create Bootable Media' utility in this software will help you createa bootable device of a mini operating system (WinPE) with AOMEI Backupper Standardinstalled, realizing SD card copier portable.

The cloning software is user-friendly and easy-to-use, so it is suitable for all groups ofusers. Free download (safe and clean) and have a try.

How to Clone Bootable SD Card Step by Step?

1. Connect the bootable SD card to a running Windows OS based computer and make sure it canbe detected. You may need a SD card reader if there is no card slot. Connect the destinationdevice as well if you want to clone bootable SD card to another.

2. Install and run AOMEI Backupper Standard. Click 'Clone' and then 'DiskClone'.

3. Select the source disk, i.e. the bootable SD card.

4. Select the destination disk. You can clone the bootable device to SD card, flash drive, portable drive, internal disk, external disk, etc.

5. On the summary page, preview the operation and specify customization settings in thelower-left pane. Click 'Start Clone' after your confirmation.

Tips:

  • Edit partitions on the destination disk: you can add unused space to all partitionshere.

  • Sector by sector clone: by checking this option, the software will copy every sectoron the bootable SD card. Do not check this option if you clone from large SD card tosmaller.

  • You may need to set the cloned drive as Active in Disk Management if you cannot bootit successfully.

  • To clone disk with commandprompt, please upgrade to its Professional edition.

Bootable SD Card vs. USB Drive

Some users also wondering the differences between bootable SD card and USB drive whilesearching for the way to clone a bootable SD card. Here will give a brief comparison tothem.

Secure Digital (SD) card and USB flash drive are both great removable storage in transferringand storing small amount of data. They use non-volatile memory to store files. When it comesto the question 'which is better for bootable device, SD card or USB drive', following twoaspects should be taken into consideration.

  • Transfer rate. In general, a USB 3.0 flash drive is much faster than Classic 10 SDcard in reading and writing speed. However, a Classic 10 SD card is possibly has sameperformance than a USB 2.0 flash drive.

  • Device capacity. You'll get greater capacity on SD card device than a USB flash drivewhen you spend the same money.

One of the biggest differences between USB and SD card should be USB has the universalcompatibility, which allows it to connect to any device with a USB port. While using a SDcard, you may need a SD card reader when the device misses a SD card slot.

In a nutshell, SD card is fairly enough for common use. If you're a speed and performancepurchaser, USB flash drive is a good choice.

Conclusion

To clone bootable SD card to another SD card or USB flash drive, AOMEI Backupper Standardwould definitely help you out within four steps only. Other than cloning bootable SD card, you could also clone hard drive to SSD or clone SSD to HDD in Windows10 for better performance.

Meanwhile, it is a reliable backup and restore software which provides robust backup solution protecting your computer andoperating system.

Overview

ImageUSB is a free utility which lets you write an image concurrently to multiple USB Flash Drives. Capable of creating exact bit-level copies of USB Flash Drive (UFDs), ImageUSB is an extremely effective tool for the mass duplication of UFDs. ImageUSB also supports writing of an ISO file byte by byte directly to an USB drive (*). ImageUSB can also be used to install OSFClone to a USB Drive for use with PassMark OSForensics™.

Unlike other USB duplication tools, ImageUSB can preserve all unused and slack space during the cloning process, including the Master Boot Record (MBR). ImageUSB can perform flawless mass duplications of all UFD images, including bootable UFDs.

imageUSB includes functionality to Zero a USB Flash Drive. This will replace the contents of the entire drive with 0s. Or alternatively to just Zero the MBR and/or GPT entries that exists on the drive. In addition, imageUSB has the ability to reformat even hard to format drives and reclaim any disk space that may be lost previously.

(*) CD ISO images use a different file systems compared to USB drives. So the direct imaging of ISO9660, Joliet or UDF file system, from a CD, to a USB drive, might not allow the USB drive to function in all operating systems. A reformat can recover the drive however. As of V1.5, imageUSB now supports extraction of ISO contents onto USB Drive.

Warning: Due to the forensic nature of image duplication by ImageUSB, please ensure that you select UFDs with a storage size similar to the image you wish to duplicate. For example, if a 2GB image is copied to an 8GB USB Flash Drive, the drive will only be able to use two out of the eight gigabytes of storage space. In this scenario, users will need to reformat the UFD in order to access the rest of the storage space.
